Well... I think there are a couple factors that the article didn't mention. First, the article noted that men have greater financial means but are still unsatisfied financially. That's probably because traditionally men have been valued primarily for their earning potential and net worth. When you know you're judged by something, and you're taught to measure your own worth by that same something, it will take more of it to satisfy you. That leads to my second point: Women traditionally have been valued--and valued themselves--primarily for their appearance. In the US, that's tied up with youth. The late 40s are when many women enter menopause, gain weight, truly begin showing their age. So they have less of the very thing that our society has taught them represents their worth. No mystery why that would make someone unhappy.
